The Elder FutharkThe House of Zophiel • Ancient Wisdom of the Runes ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ᚨ ᚱ ᚲ ᚷ ᚹ ᚺ ᚾ ᛁ ᛃ The Ancient AlphabetThe Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabet, used by Germanic peoples from roughly the second to eighth centuries. Its twenty-four characters are more than a writing system: each rune carries a name, a sound, and a complex web of meaning that touches the mythological, the practical, and the divinatory. According to the Norse Eddas, the runes were not invented but discovered — seized from the cosmic void by Odin himself, who hung suspended on the world tree Yggdrasil for nine days and nights in a supreme act of sacrificial will. Each rune connects to natural phenomena, cosmic principles, and the concerns of daily life in the ancient north: cattle and wealth, journeys by land and sea, the cycles of harvest, the obligations of kinship, the mysteries of fate. To work with the runes is to enter into dialogue with a tradition that was always simultaneously linguistic and magical, practical and sacred. The Twenty-Four RunesRunic Spreads
