Artist - Cobweb Mehers
I sculpt and paint for very different reasons. My sculptures are about exploring mythical and historical themes slowly and in depth. Many have been inspired by prehistoric art and have been a way of getting inside the heads of those who have gone before. Some were sold in conjunction with the British Museum’s Ice Age art exhibition in 2013 and included a recreation of The Swimming Reindeer commissioned for the event.
My work has also appeared in the Severin Films horror anthology, The Theatre Bizarre, and I continue to collaborate with Finnish director Lauri Löytökoski on costume and prop design. My paintings are much more personal. I’m a firm believer that the main function of art is the fixing of visions, and I use a mixture of digital and traditional techniques to record and share my experiences, and the entities encountered at the wilder ends of the consciousness spectrum. Despite their personal and subjective nature the most important aspect of this for me is exploring the points of commonality I discover across history and geography. The things which make us human remain the same no matter who, where, or when we are. I like to to immerse myself in the strange and beautiful, spending cold nights and sunny days in largely forgotten places, poking dead religions with sticks; accompanied by fairies, angels, lost gods, and my long-suffering wife. Sometimes I paint purely to get things I wish I hadn’t seen, out of my head. |
